Special Treatments

We offer specific treatments for several eye conditions.

Myopia control

Myopia, or short sightedness, is a common condition. It most frequently develops during adolescence and affects about 30% of New Zealand adults.

Progressive myopia is a concern as:

  • It will increase your dependence on glasses and or contact lenses for clear vision.
  • You will have a much greater risk of eye disease later in life.

But don’t worry, we can help you slow down its progression with myopia control.

Book an appointment with one of our optometrists and they will guide you on this journey.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

Ortho-K will allow you to have clear vision throughout the day, without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

It consists of a customised pair of contact lenses that reshape your eyes overnight.

Several of our optometrists are passionate about Ortho-K and would love to help you recover your vision without the use of eyewear. Get in touch to book an appointment.

Glaucoma treatment

Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness in New Zealand, and about 50% of people with glaucoma don’t realise they have it.

With the right treatment and support, 98% of people will preserve their sight.

Several of our optometrists are passionate about Glaucoma and through their constant research became experts on the topic.

Dry eye treatments

Dry eye can be very uncomfortable and restrictive to daily life. But it can be treated very easily and quickly.

There are several treatment options available and our experienced optometrists will be happy to discuss them with you. Get in touch to book an appointment.

Keratoconus treatment

This rare condition happens when the clear tissue on the front of the eye (cornea) bulges outward.

Some of the symptoms are blurred vision and sensitivity to light and glare.

Thankfully Keratoconus can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, if detected early on. Our experienced optometrists can diagnose and guide you on your treatment journey.

Exams and scans

Lobb Optical has some of the most modern technology in the industry on-site at our practice. This allows us to offer a range of exams and scans in Invercargill supports our experienced optometrists in their diagnosis.

OCT test

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging test. OCT uses light waves to take cross-section scans of your retina.

Your optometrist will advise you if this is recommended for your eyes.

Retinal photography

Lobb Optical has one of the most advanced retinal digital cameras, Zeiss Clarus 500, to use routinely as part of your comprehensive eye examination.

It assists in the diagnosis and management of many eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, high blood pressure and freckles.

It is useful for not only documenting but also monitoring any changes in your eye.

Pupil dilation

This test allows us to assess parts of your eye that normally can be difficult to be examined.

With dilating eye drops that will be provided to you, the muscles that close your pupil will relax. The drops will work in about 10-20 minutes and it can take 3-4 hours before vision is returned to normal. It is best to arrange for someone to drive you home after a pupil dilation test.

Your optometrist will advise you if pupil dilation is recommended for your eyes.

Visual field

A visual field test carefully examines your peripheral and central vision, which will let your optometrist know how wide your eye can see when you focus on a central point.

We mainly use visual field tests for screening and diagnosing ocular disease or testing eligibility for driving.

Corneal topography

Corneal topography captures a 2D colour map of the corneal surface of the eye, and has a 3D perspective.

This allows your optometrist to assess the shape of the cornea, which is normally smooth, and to detect any irregularities.
